DESCRIPTION

A rare Victorian green leather and brass letter clip featuring the badge of the Grenadier Guards regiment.  Beautifully made in around 1880 the badge features the crown of Queen Victoria and the regiments motto “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE” or “Shame on him who thinks evil of it” (this is also the motto of the Order of the Garter).

One of the oldest regiments in the British Army, the Grenadier Guards were formed in Flanders in May 1656 and their list of battle honours is astounding; they include:

Tangier (1680), Blenheim (1704), Waterloo (1815), Sevastopol (1855), Somme (1916), Dunkirk (1940), Rhine (1945) & Gulf War (1991).

DIMENSIONS – H:  15cm  W:  14cm

CONDITION

The leather has some discolouration and fading and is worn in places; this is consistent with its age  - please look very closely at the pictures as they form part of the description.
