DESCRIPTION
A rare hand carved boxwood group of three Chinese prisoners in a cangue. These carvings were sold to tourists visiting China and this one dates from around 1900.
A cangue (in Chinese referred to as a jia or tcha); is a device that was used for public humiliation and/or corporal punishment in East Asia up until the early 20th century. The writing on the board would normally relate the offences that had been committed along with the regional magistrate that had sealed the prisoners in it.
DIMENSIONS – H: 8.5cm W: 10cm
CONDITION
There are a couple of chips, most notably to the foot of the middle figure plus a small split to the foot of the figure on the right-hand side. The back foot on the left-hand figure appears to have been repaired and some of the writing is very faded - please look very closely at the pictures as they form part of the description.
