DESCRIPTION

An original Art Deco period Christys’ Hats shop display mannequin head; made in England around 1925.  Manufactured by Hancor Mitcham (makers mark to base) from Beritex; a type of hardened rubber.  A very decorative and useful piece.

Christy & Co Ltd was founded in 1773 and was once the largest hat manufacturer in the world.  Worn by the upper class, celebrities and Royalty they have made all types of high quality headwear from RAF flying helmets (WW2) to silk top hats for Ascot.  Still in business today they are currently owned by Liberty of London who acquired them in 2011.

DIMENSIONS – H:  36cm

CONDITION

It is a very good example and retains most of its original paint although it may have been touched up in a couple of places (although not recently).  There is some paint loss in places, most notably to the tip of his nose and it has general wear and marking consistent with its use and age.  I have carefully cleaned it so it is suitable for use as a hat stand as well as a decorative piece - please look very closely at the pictures as they form part of the description.
